I am inspired by the natural world. I look to plants, trees and their seed pods. My love for nature stems from growing up on a farm and spending most of my time while I was younger outside exploring and climbing trees. Time spent outside has led me to an appreciation of what is around us every day. Being in nature is peaceful and tranquil and allows me to stop and enjoy the beauty around me. This is what I strive to achieve through my art.

What I make walks a fine line between functionality and sculpture. I love the idea of using a handmade bowl or mug. Knowing that someone, even if it wasn’t me, took the time, care, and consideration into making an object that brings beauty into our everyday lives brings me so much satisfaction. One of my goals in making is to bring a little piece of outside into our everyday life by incorporating the textures, patterns, and colors found in nature. The idea behind creating stackable bowls arose from a happy accident but has since taken on the form of the tree trunks and branches that I would climb as a child or the tree that I pass by everyday on my way to class and work. I find that I can get lost in my thoughts when I’m walking outside, mesmerized by the interlocking and intricate patterns bark forms or the way the leaves flowing in the wind catches and reflects the light. I don’t aim to achieve perfectly smooth vessels and sculptures but instead enjoy the expressiveness of having a textured surface. Those are the qualities I strive to create with the texture and glaze on the surface of my pots. They are not meant to be solely functional but to help aid me in this quest of discovery.
